Federal Government Incentivizes Energy-Efficient Home Upgrades
A comprehensive “Healthy Environment and a Healthy Economy” plan announced by the Federal Government last December includes more than $2 billion in funding over seven years to encourage homeowners to invest in energy-efficient home improvement projects. If you make these recommended enhancements, you may qualify to receive money back from the government.
What Upgrades Are Eligible for Rebates?
Many property owners want to go greener, but may find the cost of these projects to be a barrier. With the Home Energy Rebate, updating your home can be more affordable.
Through this incentive program, Canadian homeowners can claim up to $5,000 when they install environmentally friendly updates like:
- New interior or exterior insulation
- Windows, doors and skylights
- Water heaters, furnaces and boilers
- Solar panels
- Air sealing/draft prevention

Energy-efficient home improvement projects can pay for themselves over time by saving you money on your heating, cooling and electrical bills and extending your HVAC system’s lifespan. You will also create a more comfortable living environment for your family and take steps toward energy independence. Plus, homes with smaller carbon footprints are more desirable, so you might be able to set a higher asking price when it’s time to put your house on the market.
How Can You Qualify for the Home Energy Rebate?
Before you start any renovations, you must complete a home energy assessment. A certified energy adviser will assess your household’s energy use and recommend which upgrades will net you the most significant savings. If you complete at least two of these suggested updates, you’ll receive money back. For each additional home improvement you install, you’ll get bonus incentives up to $750.

Why does the Home Energy Rebate program require you to improve two or more aspects of your home’s efficiency? Think of your house as a comprehensive system, where all components must work in concert. For instance, you won’t reap maximum benefits from installing new insulation if you have old, drafty windows and doors that allow conditioned air to escape.
It’s essential to note that homeowners who start making these improvements without first getting a home energy assessment are not eligible for the rebate. To qualify, you must also schedule a follow-up home energy assessment within 120 days of your first visit.
