Environmental conditions and air pollution may sometimes affect energy production of your solar panels system. If you live in a residential area, this is usually not a big problem. A good rainfall or a quick hose down with water is probably enough to wash off dust, pollen and dirt.
However, if your solar energy system is installed near Highway 401, for example, or Pearson airport, it can accumulate smog or oil-based pollution, which resist running off with a normal rainfall. Another good example would be a ground mount solar panels system installed on a farm or in a field with a lot of dust in the air. Hiring a professional company in these cases to help you clean your solar panels once or twice a year is usually a good idea. But if you prefer to do it yourself – that’s great!
Whatever you choose, try not to use soap or any other harsh chemicals or detergents. Soap can create a thin film or residue that will encourage more dirt to stick on your solar panels, and further reduce the power output and watt peak. Instead, use deionized or filtered water and a non-abrasive sponge or brush to wash your solar panels.
There are also specialty products like Solar Panel Wash (SPW™) available on the market, which obviously come at an extra cost.
