3 facts about current electricity prices in Ontario

1. Cost of electricity in Ontario has increased 66% from January 2007 to December 2016, which is higher than in any other province. But the “global adjustment”, which has been incorporated into the time-of-use and tiered rates in Ontario, has skyrocketed by 140%!!! from 2011 to 2016. According to the National Energy Board, Ontario electricity rates have been increasing faster than the rate of inflation:

2. Ontario Electricity Rates are the 3rd highest in the country after Nunavut and Northwest Territories (where population density is low and energy infrastructure projects are often cost-prohibitive):

3. The most expensive rates of $20.8 c/kWh are charged during the on-peak hours, when electricity demand is the highest. This usually happens during the day, when most people switch on lights and appliances and businesses run their operations:

When you install solar panels and produce your own energy during the day, you are able to offset the highest on-peak prices for electricity in Ontario, and therefore significantly reduce your electricity bill. Coupled with one of the home energy storage batteries this set up would also allow you to store excess power during the day, and then consume it later at night, instead of buying from the grid again.
