Residential Electricity Use Peaks during COVID-19

With many more people continuing to work from home because of the COVID-19, there has been a corresponding uptick in residential consumers’ electricity bills. Home energy use will undoubtedly continue to rise throughout the summer, as people run their air conditioners more frequently to meet their comfort needs in the warmer weather. Energy providers will need the flexibility to respond to the spike in demand created by shelter-in-place orders.

Even as many cities gradually begin to reopen their economies, remaining isolated from other people remains the safest way to “flatten the curve” and help prevent the transmission of illness. Therefore, experts project that there will continue to be a higher-than-average demand for residential electricity use for the foreseeable future, as people continue to telework, have online meetings and take virtual classes.

Meanwhile, there has been a dramatic drop in the use of fossil fuels such as oil and gas, with fewer people commuting to work and recreational travel becoming virtually nonexistent. This new reality could pave the way for more consumers embracing energy-efficient solutions such as solar panels to offset their skyrocketing electricity costs. Doing so would also help combat climate change, another significant global threat facing humanity.

Solar is the most abundant form of renewable energy on the planet. The technology that allows us to harness the sun’s rays to generate electricity is not only environmentally friendly, but also helps consumers save money and become more energy-independent
