Following a successful lunch of the Durham Greener Homes program in 2022, the Region has recently announced a new Loan Program allowing you to finance solar panels and batteries (in addition to the improved insulation, air sealing, heat pumps and other energy retrofits).
This is a low-cost financing program offering homeowners in the Whitby, Pickering, Ajax, Oshawa municipalities to borrow up to $125,000 at a fixed 2% interest rate for up to 15 years for their home energy retrofits such as solar PV systems, battery storage, heat pumps, insulation, EV chargers, etc.
Similar to the Greener Homes Loan Program (currently discontinued), the loan is attached to the property, and repaid through the property tax bill. In other words, you don’t make payments to a bank or financial institution. The loan is structured as a Local Improvement Charge (LIC) with its portion added to your property tax bill. You repay it over a fixed 15-year term at 2% interest. Even if you decide to move and sell your house, the loan will be attached to the property, not the homeowner.
Your approximate monthly payments could be as high as:
| Loan Amount | Approx. Monthly Cost |
| $10,000 | $64/month |
| $50,000 | $322/month |
| $100,000 | $644/month |
| $125,000 | $804/month |
These low-cost financing options are being offered in addition to the already widely popular Ontario Home Renovation Savings Program, offering you up to $10,000 incentives for solar panels and home energy battery installation. And if you live in Whitby, you may have access to A Deep Retrofit Rebate of up to $5,000 for eligible energy-efficiency projects. For that, you’d have to connect with a Durham Greener Homes Coach who can walk you through the whole process. It is important to note that the new Weather-Ready Home Assessment is absolutely free for qualified residents.
Give us a call, and we’d be happy to connect with a few reputable solar panels installers in the Durham region.
