Electric Vehicle FAQs

EV charging signs in Ontario

Where can I charge my EV?

At home, you can charge your car overnight with a home charger. This is the fastest way to charge your car, and it’s convenient because you can do it while you sleep.
If you don’t have a charger at home, you can charge your car at work or on the go with a public charger, which are usually slower than home chargers, but they’re still a great way to charge your car when you’re out and about.
There are also many Level 3 fast chargers across the province that can charge your car much faster than a standard charger. These are great for long road trips or if you need to charge your car quickly.

How far can electric vehicles go on a single charge?

The range of an electric vehicle depends on a few factors, such as the size of the battery, driving habits, and weather conditions. Most all-electric vehicles have a range of 100-200 miles per charge, while hybrids typically get 30-50 miles per charge.

How long does it take to charge an electric car?

Again, this depends on the size of the battery and the type of charger being used. Level one chargers (120 volt) will take much longer, whereas Level 3 chargers can charge your entire battery in under an hour.

How much does it cost to charge an electric car in Ontario?

This depends on a few factors, including the size of your battery, the type of charger you’re using, and the price of electricity in your area. On average, it costs about $0.15 per kilowatt-hour to charge an electric car. So, if you have a 40 kWh battery and are paying $0.15 per kWh, it will cost you only $6 to charge your car from empty to full, depending on the charger you use.

What are the benefits of owning an electric car?

There are many benefits to owning an electric car! For one, they’re much cheaper to operate than gas cars. Electric cars also emit zero emissions, so they’re much better for the environment. And, since they have fewer moving parts than gas cars, they require less maintenance and are often more reliable. Where should I start?

There are several options for getting your foot in the door of the EV world for the first time (that don’t cost as much as ordering the latest shiny Tesla).
Firstly, you can lease an EV. In Ontario, there are many options for leasing an EV, and you can often find deals that include free charging or even free home charging equipment.
Secondly, you can buy a used electric car. Used EVs are often much cheaper than new ones, and they still have all the same benefits as a new EV! If you live in Ontario and are looking you buy a used electric vehicle, you can find out everything you need to make your choice by watching this great video of a seminar put together by Plug’n Drive: https://youtu.be/Wk9-Xf61pbo?t=780
Finally, why not try out an EV for a short period of time with a car-sharing service like Zipcar or CarShareHood? This is a great way to see if an EV is right for you without making a long-term commitment.

How can I get the most out of my EV?

If you’ve decided to make the environmentally conscious and financially savvy switch to an electric vehicle, it is also worth considering generating your own electricity and powering your car independently and for free!
Solar panels are a great way to do this, as they can provide enough energy to power your car and home. With net metering, you can even sell the excess electricity back to the grid and make a little profit.
